The Alameda County Administration Building in Oakland has been renamed the Susan S. Muranishi County of Alameda Administration Building, honoring our county's first female and longest-serving County Administrator. Ms. Muranishi was celebrated for her leadership and dedication to public service at a renaming ceremony on January 6, 2025.
The resolution to rename the building was brought before the Board of Supervisors by long-time Alameda County Supervisor Keith Carson. The ceremony was the "last official act" for Supervisor Carson who retired on January 6 after a long and illustrious career. The honor surprised Ms. Muranishi, "I am humbled and deeply honored and find myself in a situation that I never imagined would happen. County Administrators pride themselves on never being surprised! Thank you to Supervisor Carson who surprised many of us by bringing a resolution forward to rename this building with the unanimous support of the full Board. I am grateful for the Board’s trust and confidence that has allowed me to lead this great county."
During her career, Ms. Muranishi has navigated the county through significant economic challenges and was instrumental in implementing policies that improved health, social services, public safety and infrastructure. Her commitment to fiscal stewardship and innovative programs earned her respect among colleagues, community partners, labor leadership and other stakeholders.
The renaming ceremony was attended by County elected and appointed officials, community leaders, employees and residents who praised Ms. Muranishi's contributions. During Supervisor Carson's comments, he highlighted Ms. Muranishi's role in advancing innovative programs and services, promoting diversity, and fostering economic development in Alameda County.
Ms. Muranishi expressed gratitude for the honor, emphasizing the collaborative efforts of county staff and the community in achieving shared goals. "While Board members are the ultimate policy and decision makers, all of the important decisions made in this building, have been the result of an incredible staff and team of elected and appointed department heads that I have the honor of leading. Every initiative we have launched, every challenge we have faced, and almost every decision we have made was the result of the collaboration, cooperation and partnerships among our leadership team, employees, community partners and other stakeholders," as she encouraged continued dedication to public service, to support for the needs of all residents, and to pave the way for generations of new leaders.
The Susan S. Muranishi County of Alameda Administration Building stands as a testament to Ms. Muranishi's legacy and the positive impact of her many decades of service to Alameda County.
